How to choose a ripe watermelon

  1. The thing you should remember is that watermelons ripen in the beginning of August, they are all green in July.
  2. Look at the tail of the watermelon. It should be dried at the bottom, i.e. near the watermelon.
  3. Check the rind. It shouldn’t be waxed, it must be easily scratched by a nail but not spit. Rub the rind – it should be glossy.
  4. A ripe watermelon has lower density than a green one. Weigh several equal water-melons. The lightest one is the ripest.
  5. Squeeze it – the ripe watermelon will crackle.
  6. Knock on it. The sound should be dull.
  7. Look at the spot at the place on the side with which it lay on the ground. A good sign is the yellow color of it.
  8. Look at the surface of the watermelon. The net or brown stripes are a good sign also.

The more signs of ripeness you get from your examination the more likely you buy a ripe fruit.
